“On Thursday, May 23, I had to fill in for a Windham Meals on Wheel driver who called out at the last minute. Muriel Burns was my first stop. When she came to the door, she greeted me with a big smile and told me that the following Monday, May 27, would be her 100th birthday. She invited me into her living room, where a few friends were enjoying cupcakes sent over by a local bakery to kick off Muriel’s upcoming celebration. I followed her into the kitchen with her Meals on Wheels and helped her put them away. When Muriel and I walked back into the living room, we were surprised to find Mayor Thomas Devivo and Town Councilmember Dawn Niles had dropped by to present Muriel with an official citation declaring May 27, 2024 ‘Muriel Burns Day’ in the Town of Windham.”
Muriel is justifiably proud that she remains able to live independently, but as she told Eugene, “I could never do it without Meals on Wheels.”
