Higher Edge is the only organization in Eastern Connecticut dedicated to empowering limited-income, first-generation students, to access, succeed and graduate from college. Since its inception in 2011, Higher Edge has grown from serving six students at one high school to serving 40 high school students and 120 college-level students in 2023 -2024. Over the years, Higher Edge has expanded its programming to provide the ongoing support students need once enrolled in college, helping them successfully navigate the academic and financial challenges they often face.
Since 2016 the JPOFF has partnered with Higher Edge to help support students throughout New London and to build a program in Windham. The 2023 grant awarded to Higher Edge supports the hiring of a Communications and Outreach Coordinator. This role will enhance the organization’s fundraising capacity, increase community awareness of its programs, and establish new partnerships in surrounding towns.
“Higher Edge has been a grant recipient of The Jeffrey P. Ossen Family Foundation since 2016. JPOFF was instrumental in providing funding to establish a programming site in Willimantic, allowing Higher Edge to expand its reach outside of New London. But far more than financial support, JPOFF is a key ally. Executive Director Jacqueline Berkowitz does so much more than listen to the needs of the organization. She shares valuable insight, connects us with resources and opens the door for a robust discussion. Her belief in the organization’s work strengthens us and truly keeps Higher Edge moving forward.”
